IKC Principal Biography

International Kingdom College – IKC

Darren Jones (biography)

After gaining a first-class Graduate Diploma in Jazz, Contemporary and Popular Music at the City of Leeds College of Music, the only Jazz and Pop music course in the UK at the time, Darren combined a freelance performing and peripatetic teaching career. However, it was clear that Darren’s real passion was teaching; in 1999, he returned to university to complete his PGCE in Secondary Music with modules in numeracy and outdoor education at the University of Leeds. Darren then joined the staff of Southfield Technology College as an NQT Head of Department and began the task of rebuilding music within the school.

In 2003, Darren began his international teaching career at Regent's School, Bangkok, where he was Director of Music and Head of Creative Arts. This was followed by working at Shrewsbury International School, Bangkok, as Director of Performance and Instrumental Studies. Similar roles followed in Singapore (Tanglin Trust), Oman (The Sultan's School), and India (The International School Bangalore) before moving to Cairo (The British International School Cairo), firstly as Director of Music, followed by promotion to Head of Lower School and then Deputy Head Academic. Darren completed two years as Deputy Head of College, Pastoral and Residential Life at United World College, Dilijan, Armenia. He then moved on to be Head of Secondary School at Myanmar International School Yangon, leading the secondary school through the very difficult pandemic period. This was followed by being the Principal of Beaconhouse Newlands International School, Kuala Lumpur.

Darren holds an MA in Education Management and Leadership from The Open University and has also been awarded Fellowships from Trinity College London, The Chartered College of Teachers, The Royal Society of Arts and The Chartered Institute of Managers. Recently, he completed the Certificate in School Management and Leadership from Harvard University.

In his spare time, Darren enjoys playing golf, cooking, and reading about politics and military history. He is also a fan of Rugby Union and supports Wales. Darren is thrilled to have joined the team at IKC.
